Bengal Engineering College (University)
Located near the famous Botannical Garden, in Howrah, Sibpur, the Institute ( presently University ) is one of the largest and oldest in the city of Kolkata, imparting the light of ‘ Technical Education ‘, throughout its’ existence. The college started with a handful of staffs and students, in the year 1856, with the mission of enabling students to pursue an engineering career. An affiliated college under ‘ University of Calcutta ‘, till 1992, later on this college was given the status of ‘Deemed University’, which finally was promoted to the status of a full fledged University, on 01st of October, 2004.

Indira Gandhi National Open University
Inaugurated as an university promoting distance education in 1985, India Gandhi National Open University was aimed for reaching out to the masses. Located, in Bikash Bhavan in the Salt lake City, in Kolkata, the University widely promotes, various courses for the adult and working population of the city, who cannot reach out for a full time educational career. The university is well equipped with 26 Regional Centres, and 504 study centres, and distributes study material for courses delivered , designed by their own faculties.

Calcutta University
One of the largest and renowned universities of West Bengal, as well as India, Calcutta University, hosts several campuses located at different locations of the city. Offering a wide range of courses, inclusive of undergraduate and graduate, the University was founded in 1857, under the British Rule. The main campus is situated at College Street, which consists of a wide association of ancient building structures viz. Ashutosh Building, Hardinge Building, and the Centenary building. The University also hosts Science Colleges at Rajabajar and Ballygunge, besides the department of Economics at B T Road, and another famous campus at Alipore.

Jadavpur University
One of the premier educational institutes’ of Bengal, Jadavpur University , presently an autonomous body, on S C Mullick Road, Jadavpur, was set up by West Bengal State Legislature in 1955. Currently, the main campus of the University is situated in Jadavpur, followed by that of Salt Lake. Several specialized institutes are affiliated to the University, which includes Jadavpur Vidya Peeth, J D Birla institute, Institute of Business Management etc. Disbursing various degree , undergraduate courses, as well as engineering and technology courses, the main campus occupies an area of 2.7 acres. The University also promotes special areas of research and advanced studies for doctoral and post doctoral students.

Rabindra Bharati University
Enjoying a third priority status within the five universities of West Bengal, Rabindra Bharati University was founded on May 8, 1962, under the Rabindra Act of the Government of West Bengal. The University was originally hosted in the building where the great poet ‘ Rabindra Nath Tagore’ , was born, but presently only the department of Arts is located here. A new campus of the University was constructed, in the year 1976, on 56A, B T Road; Kolkata: 700 050. Popularly known as ‘Emerald Bower’, and built by Harakumar Tagore, ( Tagore’s uncle ), this building, constructed on B T Road, contains the main administrative office of the University . Reconstitution of the University happened again on 1981.
